@58Chev – definitely practice on the cutoffs – I did this and I still messed up with my nice project pieces :).
Have a good day. -

Hey Peter – it is a possibility I guess. I did re-set up my blade making sure it was a perfect 90, and I did also remove the aluminum key once and reset it since it wasn’t a perfect 90 degrees the first time. Thought I had it good the second time around, something I can have another look at though for sure.
Jim, thanks for the suggestion on the…[Read more]

I kind of switch between carnuba wax and paste wax myself. I Have both in the drawer, don’t really give it too much of a thought on selection. I think that the carnuba wax is easier to apply than the paste wax, but the paste seems like it will stand up longer. Good reminder though, I might take care of the cast iron today!

Good morning all,
I wrote this post sometime mid-last year, but just didn’t get around to posting it or taking pictures to accompany. It is fairly long – pics of process and final product at the bottom if not interested. Some questions throughout though that maybe you can help me with.
Have a great day. This post was originally supposed to be…[Read more]

Wow, nice to see this thread is still alive.
@Montreal_Medic, I will try to get around to taking some photos of the unknown tools.
Have a good one all! -

Hey Eric – if I had to guess I would say it is a hardwood on the dresser.

@r-ice – sure glad it looks better than before. Would have been a shame if I somehow made them worse.
Jim… Thanks for the extra warm welcome? Good community.

@PI_woodworker – Hey Lon, thanks. Certainly take some time. Generally something I would enjoy, but the rushed nature of these pieces made it a bit of a chore some nights. Though I’d definitely like to move into making some furniture from scratch, I think it will be a while before I get back to a bigger wood project in the shop.
@jponto07 – Hi…[Read more]

Hi all,
Long time! I think since I’ve last posted here we’ve refinished our washroom and I’ve built an office/music room in the basement, as we needed my old space for an incoming family addition. As part of that addition, my wife wanted me to refinish some hand-me-down furniture. I had a dresser and tall hutch/dresser combo thing to work…[Read more]

Nice that this thread was resurrected. I still really enjoy the lamp. It is one of the more ‘polished’ things I have made so far.
Thanks for the links JimDaddyO.
Take care -

Like reading your stories guys!
I still have a few other pieces that need to be cleaned up, some planes, old hand saws… some other items that I don’t even know what they are.
Working on some more home renovations again and I’m in the zone so don’t want to start any side projects and get distracted. I’m on a deadline 🙂 -

Thanks Dabbs. It would have been such a shame if everything just went to the dump or thrift store.
And, like you said, they don’t make ’em like they used to. -

@Dustincoc, thanks. I was thinking something along those lines. At least what I plan to use it for isn’t very far off.
Enjoying reading others stories.

As it happens, my grandma worked at union carbide, in their office. I’m pretty sure she still knows shorthand.

Post 2 of 2.
The above post brings me to a related thought.
I went to a local trunk sale a couple weekends ago. I ended up only buying some items from an older gentleman who had a very limited selection in the back of his van. He was there with his teenage grandson. Apart from a collection of ball caps, his offerings were high-quality vintage…[Read more]

Hi all,
It’s been a while since I’ve posted. Busy around the house and at work. I finished the basement washroom a while back that I was working on, great to have a second washroom in the house now. Some solid learning along the way. I still check in and browse the forum, even if not posting.
A month ago my grandfather passed away. He was…[Read more]

A slope on the top lip of the pan would have made sense. It looks to be pretty horizontal. Thanks for the replies though. I’ll be sure to wipe it out with a brush every so often to try to keep the scaling down. Our water isn’t too bad here as it is.
