Just started a small fence and gate job and we hit a cable line… Completely unmarked!
I called the utility Locate service and had them come mark where the lines were buried, and even went as far as to paint a solid white line along the path we are digging.
Apparently this wasn’t enough though. We augered a 12″ hole only to find a coax wire split in half when the auger was completely removed. The nearest mark for Any utility is about 15′ feet away…
Had this ever happened to you? I guess is should be happy it wasn’t electric or natural gas…

October 22, 2015 at 12:33 pm #412793Never happened to me so far. I just ripped out couple irrigation pipes with a mini excavator. Even the homeowner didn’t know that they were there.

Wonderful!
Whose problem is it now? Yours, homeowner/insurance, or the people who failed to mark the utility?

What did the locate people have to say?October 22, 2015 at 4:01 pm #412831Doobie
ModeratorThey don’t care out here when it comes to the runs to the home for cable or tel. They do not locate them. The only ones they clear for are the main lines.
I’ve had many locates over the years at my house. I’ve even had to correct the guy doing it at times when he locates what he thinks is electrical for my buried coax. Gas they always get right. But electrical has been a mish mash.
October 22, 2015 at 4:27 pm #412833Around here the companies do pretty good job. If you hit something not marked then it is between the marker and the utility company as to who pays. You don’t call and try to “sneak on in” and hit something and you might as well just sign over your company to the utilties.

October 22, 2015 at 5:27 pm #412848I think it’s great you took the time to take a picture for us!
I would have never thought of that. I would have been looking for a shut off.
I must say, it looks like you have a good aim.October 22, 2015 at 5:56 pm #412851Oh wow, how big was that water main that you hit?

Uh yeah. It’s a mess.
Oh wow, how big was that water main that you hit?
It was a big one. 6″ they said….feeding 500 homes in the area!

I must say, it looks like you have a good aim.HA! I knew where the shut off is, but couldn’t kill the water because the valve was way too deep in the ground!
The picture was taken well after I realized I could do no more until the utility idiots have up with the tool to shut off the water…about 30 minutes after we broke the water line.

Private utilities, those past the meter or a point of connection such as a water service, are typically not marked and therefore your responsibility. I an electrical line that ran around a house from the meter that we ended up drilling right alongside. the wires were visible in the hole but not scratched.
In our area, the locators are so far behind, it is not uncommon for something not to be located. I usually try to give an extra couple of days notice because of that.
It is always a good idea to take pictures of your locates (or lack thereof) for proof in the event that you hit something. Photo’s do not lie.
