    Understanding Wood Finishing
I just received a copy of this book (author Bob Flexner) and I am impressed! Complete discussion of finishing from wood preparation to final polish. The author gives easy to follow guidelines for finishing and dispels common myths regarding finishing of every kind. Good information on repairing finishes as well.

Easy to find online; I got my copy through Abebooks for under $10 including shipping. I should have owned this book years ago, it would have saved me from making countless mistakes over the years.

From what I hear Flexner is THE man for finishing. I ought to look into getting that book too.

Here’s another one that came highly recommended when I was tipped off about the Flexner book also.

    https://www.amazon.com/Foolproof-Wood-Finishing-Those-Finish/dp/1565233034

LV carries it also, but the cover has since changed.

Flexner’s book is also available at LV and it’s cover has changed over the years as well.

I have the earlier edition of Flexner’s book, same jacket as in your pic. LV has the newer one, I believe.

Flexner is so enjoyable to read. He is the authority when it comes to finishing. Great that you mention his book. I agree it is a must have for the woodworker.

Very easy to read, for sure. I’m about half way through now and find it easy going and really informative. I’m learning that I was doing a lot of things wrong for a lot of years.

I bought this book used a few years ago from Thrift books. I started reading it but I have finished it. The last few weeks I though about picking it up and reading it again.

I have a thread of used books I bought here.

Just came across this from Bob Flexner in Woodshop News: 10 Finishing Rules That Explain So Much:

Common sense when you think about it. When you understand those rules life becomes so much easier. Thanks for sharing that, Lon.

I bought a copy of Flexner’s book, but it is taking me a while to go through it, it is not quite textbook like but it is thorough. I would recommend it if you are serious about finishing.

First time through it took me a while, too. Now I find myself reviewing sections just to clarify and be more confident with finishing choices.

It is the most thorough book on finishing I have found and very easy to follow. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
