I was told many times by guys as I learned that “they don’t come to work to teach”, this really angered me. Well, everyday I go to work to learn, teach and share knowledge no mater if it’s your first day or your 35th year.

You’ve got the better attitude Chris, don’t let those kinds of guys deter you. To many people are selfish and have that ‘it’s all about me’ attitude in this world as it is.

    I agree.

In my job I am force to teach. As the my company hires alot a temporary employees. So the fulltimes employees are expected to train the temporary employees. It really doesn’t doesn’t bother me if the person is willing to learn and come to work every day. But what bothers me is when you training somebody and they have a hard time learning it or they don’t show up. The company doesn’t move them to a different job or just get rid of them.

Kinda reminds me of the guy training me in glass blowing,
I would ask questions about the methods and reasoning on how and why,
His response is always, well we have been doing like that for thirty years! ??
I would say yeah but we used to drive cars with no seat belts also, and pour old paints and oils down sewers, but times and procedures change?

Guess that expression is at times real
Can’t teach and old dog a new trick

I definitely don’t know everything, and am always willing to learn new approaches and techniques, especially if it will make my job / work safer and faster, plus nicer

    OLD THREAD WARNING..

I am always trying to teach my girls many different things. The simplest things as opening a package when I get it or even opening the mail.

The other day my youngest daughter had a appointment with a specialist. We also need to have her x rays redone as she cooperate during her last visit so they didn’t turn out. My wife & I struggled to convince her. That she need cooperate during her x rays & visit with specialist. So we can find what might be wrong with her. I was a bit of struggle to teach her that we need doctor’s to help us get better and usually it only takes a few minutes of our time. I told her if you have a good visit I will reward you with something. It turns she requested a remote control car. So when I got from work that night I order a remote control car. Now looks like I will have teach her how to operate this car.

It was a small price to pay to see her cooperate at this appointment. I will see if I was successful the next appointment’s.

One of my favorite quotes goes like “If you’re green, you’re growing. If you’re ripe, you’re rotting”. For me that translates at work into if you are always learning and adapting you’re growing, if you’re stuck in your ways you’re rotting. I’ve seen some people stuck in their ways of doing things and it’s like you can tell they forget more and more of the details as time goes on cause they don’t exercise their brain enough and nothing is fresh on their minds.

P.s. Awesome thread guys, kids deserve to learn some basic skills with their hands. I especially see the value of showing them an example of a hard way of doing a task and a smart way of doing that same task, thus instilling work smarter not harder in them with a real world example to reflect back on.

Well yesterday I took my youngest daughter too the Hardware store. She always likes to go look at the stuff and they give out suckers. When we got there we headed to the plumbing aisle. When there was looking for a trap. My daughter said hey Dad the piece looks like a Y. Kinda made laugh. I told her she was right and she found a piece that looked like a T. I was pretty happy that she picked up on that. Before we left she to play with magnetic that is used to pick up the bulk nails & screws.

I like that philosophy. Doesn’t matter how old you are; if you are not learning, you are wasting time. Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut.

There are only two ways to do things; the right way and again.

Fair enough, that’s true. Warning deep thought pattern ahead: human brains aren’t all the same in terms of the way we think. There’s always gonna be someone out there with an insight that improves something you’ve done countless times. There’s never a “best way” there’s “good ways” and “better ways” (<<< infinite potential for better ways that haven’t been thought of as well as the mass amount of ways that have been thought of) which vary based on specific details of the task at hand. Not everyone is the type to spark original idea’s (or beginnings of ideas) in their own brain, but if they’re open to new idea’s from other people then sometimes their brain will spark a twist to an idea brought up by another person, and in turn improve that idea. This process of brainstorming ideas can sometimes go back and forth multiple times between two or more people and result in really good improvements to the task at hand.

On high production job these brainstormers as you call them are the first to go.

The one high production job I worked on had some of the stupidest stuff happen, the jobs still running but most the crew from the start of the job have quit or been fired. Low and behold the last remaining 2 out of the original starting crew are the Lead who was exposed for lying to get the job and not knowing nearly what his position required and another guy with 8 years experience but basically worked as a laborer because in the company owners words “I have to teach him the same techniques over again every job” he added as he told me I was sharp and had a good work ethic. Yea I don’t regret not working there anymore in the slightest.

This doesn’t surprise me, nor is it limited to high production carpentry or construction jobs, I am leading a project on my day job right now that has a very similar cast of characters that I have to work around or get rid of. It is not as easy as that but I understand your pain.

When I say high production ,, I mean 2 or 3 homes a day production.. This stuff is no mystery. It’s all been done before all over the world and the moves are set in stone. Some guy looking into the sky think of a better way will be replaced so fast.

Thankfully no pain here, very happy with the work I’ve had since and if anything that job would have caused me tons of pain to my body due to their lack of well thought out planning and technique.

Sounds Ripe, but I respect you a lot for putting up with the grind to be in the position you’re in and provide for your Ohana.

Well yea that’s a description of a not very bright person, looking into the sky while at work isn’t really a trait your gonna see from someone who provides quality ideas.

On Saturday I had my daughter help put her & her sister bunk bed together. I had her start the bolts and then used the drill/driver to tightening the bolts. She loved doing. She also asked to help put the bed slats in. She also enjoys helping us in the kitchen.

Last week and this week I am training a co worker. Last week we were running a different machine and this week we are running a different machine again. Last night my supervisor I guess she didn’t like that I was just standing there watching this co worker. She thought my co worker should be alright to be by himself and she wanted me to do another job. I told her no as it wasn’t fair to me or my co worker. As he wouldn’t be get the proper training. He also didn’t know the control panel very good. He would be asking me questions all the time and I could ended making a error like I did last week. I ended up staying training him. Sometimes all them seem to care about is how much product we make. Not if it is good or bad.

Good, glad it worked out for you in the end,

We were off for 5 weeks,
When we returned last week, the night of the vote, I had easily 5 Co worker friends I played hockey with, who are management, text me asking and hoping we will be back in the shop

They don’t being coached to do our work,
They could not believe what we have to deal with,
We have been telling them for years about the problems and roadblocks and nuissances of all these just on time and kaisan systems
Finally they saw and realized first hand,
They were actually kinda amazed how we were able to get the work out and without any errors, and on time.

Don’t get me wrong, for the most part, these systems will work, but not for every industry

Good, glad it worked out for you in the end,

It did work out in the end and has stayed that way so far. Other then last night my co worker was taken away to do another job. He should have stayed with me to learn how to do a change over.

It was kind nice that they got to see what you have too put up with. I hope there will be some changes for you soon.

At my work they have started a committee to help come up with some ideas to make improve with stuff we do. Part of me wants to join this committee and part of me doesn’t. I am hoping it works out. But I am not sure it will.

I was told this morning I will have too go for Health & Safety training in October for 5 days.
