Repointing Brick – Grinding out Advice

    Hi all carpenter by trade, but I like doing my own work too.

    I was curious how you mason pros grind out large areas for repointing.

    I’s say the old mortar mix is probably close to a type N, maybe a tad stronger. What I found was if you cut the middle of the mortar to relieve the joint then hand chisels are murder. But if you grind more then you basically end up shaving the brick on the horizontal.

    I saw they had the little Trow&Holden pneumatic chippers, but those are a pretty penny, which is fine if that’s the right tool, but for large areas, I just don’t see it.

    What do you pros do? relief and go to town chiseling? to remove the rest? The head joints I can handle fairly quick with now problem.
