I took my first step with my new leg.
This is the ‘test socket’ and I get my permanent one next Friday.

February 20, 2016 at 11:58 am #475304That’s great to hear Phil. I have to ask, how did it feel?
What did it feel like?
Hmmm.
Kind of like stilts, but different. With stilts there are two anchor points for stability and steering – your foot and hand. Maybe more like a pogo stick in slow motion.Getting a feel for where the foot and ground come together is a first trick since that feeling is near the knee instead of the foot. So how long is a step and how far apart are the feet? (without peeking… eyes ahead) Since I had a rail on each side to hold on to, it wasn’t as hard to balance as I thought it would be. Without them, it will be teetery. 🙂 Hard not to trip over your own feet or have one go off to the side.
They gave me a tour of the place and I asked for job when I visited the shop (maybe I can get this sort of on a BTP topic 🙂 ).
The process is:
Make a shell out of plaster casting material.
Fill it with plaster when it dries to make a solid form.
Heat a plastic sheet and vacuum form it over the plaster form.
Try it on… heat it to get any pressure points out.
Make another socket if needed. There’s a huge grinder with a bunch of bits (up to 6” long and 4” in diameter – lots of shapes) to grind down the plaster form if needed to make the plaster fit the vacuum form. The ‘kid’ that works in the shop is a recent hire. He has his master’s degree.
Thanks to all for the good wishes and moral support.
