Why did people leave this site?

The whole points scheme change in Sep 2016 sent a lot of guys packin’.

I joined in 2016. I didn’t post alot in the beginning.

You believe they left due to the new point scheme?

Absolutely. It was arguably implemented to deal with curtailing all the nonsense fluff being posted, but it also inadvertently purged a lot of members. Some were just non-contributing points grabbers anyways, but others are sorely missed pros who I’m sure was the last straw with many of them who didn’t care for all the non-pros that had been allowed on the forum over the years as well.

The points increases for what things cost to redeem for, of what was up to 50% more in some cases, was just too much all at once for some to digest. I myself believe that had they just lowered the max points per day amount one can earn and not touched or only marginally changed points/prize costs, there would be a lot more active members here today.

One thing that I’m sure also miffed a lot of members was to not warn of the impending points increase costs, or at least to just allow a window of time to request prizes under the old points redemption costs. Especially with such a huge increase, I was shocked, as I’m sure others were as well, of which many showed their displeasure via never posting again on BTP almost immediately.

I think the idea of doing it that way was to avoid a massive amount of work in dealing with a flood of redemption requests, but it also had an unintended undesired effect as well with pissing off a lot of members in return who just walked out the door. That, in my humble opinion, is likely the single biggest catalyst of members leaving back then.

Nobody would openly say anything about all this on the forum at that time when that bomb was dropped on us, but now with it so far removed, nothing wrong with letting anybody at Bosch who reads this forum know what we understood of what happened at this point and what we perceived of it.

as one of the longest tenured members here as well as one of the moderators… i will attest that many people did actually leave when the points system changed. they didnt technically shut down their accounts that im aware of they simply went dorment

from what i understand the point system was changed because it was believed have changed do to be taken advantage of. many members were making extremely short posts that did nothing to contribute to any given thread.. they responded with nothing more than a single sentence and this was simply to attain points.. there was some bickering and fighting amongst members too , each post they again gained points..

either way these issues were dealt with by the previous administrator who did a hell of a job and tended to these forums daily if not every other day.. something which is sorely missed

Thanks for the info on the fourm. I guess I somehow miss this happening.

So true Jeff. So true. Jim is sorely missed for his hard work here, and now we are in what is still what might be termed a ‘state of flux’ with where BTP goes from here.

To me the name BeThePro seems to suggest it wants a group of DIYers who wants to be like the pros, learn from the pros, work smarter like the pros, and use best practices and efficient tools like the pros.

And that’s me in a nutshell. I humbly consider myself an advanced DIYer, often doing better work than what I’ve personally experienced form ‘pros’ I’ve occasionally engaged over the decades, and also what I see online from many other so-called pros as well.

It can be quite an adventure trying to find how to do things right when it comes to renos and construction. Not only are there bad ‘How-To’ books out there riddled with bad advice/techniques/methods, there’s an even worse amount available on the internet it seems. You really figure these things out over the years.

This is why I still covet this BTP forum. There’s still a handful of bonafide Pro members available for the asking that can help guide me when needed to help me do it right. I know enough to know that most resources on the internet are infested with hacks and it is perilous sometimes to figure out the posers over the proper advice needed from real pros. I know those guys here who are pros and I treat their advice like Gold.

One of the aspects of receiving advice I learned is looking to discern where the advice is coming from geographically. A lot of things one could do in a four season warmer clime can be dramatically different for those in what are real four season environments.

Another one is if somebody lives in an earthquake zone. Very different for me here where I’m in a ‘yellow’ zone for earthquakes where we get the odd tremor from hundreds of miles away from where most earthquakes occur for us in the St-Lawrence lower river basin and north of it in the province of Quebec. We just don’t need certain procedures mechanically or structurally despite the fact I’m an overkill builder and do so anyways at times.

Same goes for advice from someone living in ocean coastal regions. We don’t get salt mist air errosion issues here. Here, we are subject to massive differences in seasonal humidity levels. From absolute dryness in our winter months, to heavily humid summer months. I learned in woodworking you always have to keep these factors in mind in many reno/builds also.

I started out as a household minor reno guy living in an apartment and graduated 20 years ago when I bought my house to setting up a woodworking shop. What actually ended up prevailing in the years was to do my own major renos and builds on my house.

While I don’t undertake massive jobs, I do partake into some pretty decent renos and builds for myself. This is largely due from as previously mentioned that we’ve had some early on bad experiemces with contractors, but also because I just love to build stuff also and I enjoy using tools. It has truly become a passion for me in all regards.

When I found this site I was confused as hell. I got most of my tools stolen and was searching for a new start and wanted in depth tool discussion. I saw dozens of youtube videos but something was missing. So the tool sub forum was the main reason I joined up.

Sorry to learn that happening to you Sami, but I’m glad as a result you ended up joining us.

To me the other forums were more like space fillers, yet there are lots of good stuff in other forums once you dig in and drill deeper.

It is hard searching this forum using its internal search function. Try Googling ‘bethepro’ ahead of your criteria on Google. You can pull up better results quite often instead.

Now we know why many guys left. The question is why there isn’t a lot of new members joining up to keep the place hopping? Is it because this place is too intimidating because it does have a club or neighborhood bar feel to it?

Good question. I truly can’t think of a good answer to that question. Can anybody else?

We’re an especially welcoming group for those who want to learn and/or contribute, but as is known, please don’t just join to endlessly put up fluff posts to garner points for free tools. That is frowned upon.

To lurkers reading this, this is a great forum with great knowledgeable members. If you join, please respect the balance of this civil community forum that is inherent with one that offers rewards which inherently creates that civility intrinsically as a result of it being a rewards forum for posting and getting ‘points’ towards such freebies from a great quality tool manufacturer like Bosch and its sponsors. Join, but don’t abuse it.

Basically in a nutshell, people keep civil here because there are rewards involved. But you need to be be a ‘contributor’ as well to be part of the bar/club/neighborhood.

    FWIW.

Just for the record, I didn’t leave. I just took a break for a while.
I didn’t have any questions since all the apartments I manage are in pretty good shape. And, I was so burned out that I sorely needed a long break.

NOW I’M BACK, LOL. I had to gut an entire apartment. I’m in the process of remodeling it right now. I’ll post about it in another thread.

I hope the guys that fled will return!!

So do I. There’s a lot of missing pros out there that I’d love to see back posting here again.

The fluffers who left can stay away though….lol!

Thanks all! It’s nice to get back to work. I have to post some photos of the ugly mess of an apartment I had to gut. It’s gonna look great when I finish it.

Hope you all get what you want from Santa!

    What are “fluffers”?

The term denotes people who post mostly posts that are of no contributive value. Some useless posts are OK by anybody, but fluffers do almost nothing but ‘fluff’ posts. As a forum that has a points/rewards system, this is especially frowned upon. Fluffers are also referred toas ‘points grabers’ here due to this unique forum’s setup.

OK thanks for the clarification because I have heard a different definition of fluffers in the porn industry 😂

They do have some great tools on the list , do you have anything particular you would like to save for from the list.

I can add that the 4.0 12V batteries are no longer on the list (at least in practice – still on there in writing, but no longer available).

It would be nice if someone could remove these tools from the list.

I know, not only would it help to know more clearly what is actually available, but I’m guessing if someone removed everything that’s no longer possible to redeem for the list might be a little easier to skim through, lol.
