Just redeemed and awaiting still an order for the Bosch 1773AK 5in Concrete Surface Grinder and I happen to find out today that Bosch has upgraded this grinder with the newly released Bosch CSG15 model.

So far, it looks to be only available through US retailers, but it does sound like they did some nice improvements. Just wanted to alert you concrete guys about this upgrade and also see if anybody reading has this new grinder and even better if you do if you also had been using the older 1773AK model and how you felt it compared to the older one.

Looks like some of the upgrades is more amps, but less RPM. A better closed system for the bearings and a new proprietor shroud which also boasts of ease of use when up against adjacent walls. Thankfully for those looking to upgrade, it looks like it still uses the DC500 series grinding cups. The price of the newer model is pretty well on par with the older one looking at US retailers pricing.

Here’s the March 15th 2015 Bosch press release here:

    http://www.boschtools.com/AboutBoschTools/PressRoom/Pages/031015_csg15.aspx

The CSG15 Bosch product page here:

    http://www.boschtools.com/Products/Tools/Pages/BoschProductDetail.aspx?pid=csg15#support

(Note, that the owner’s manual on the site links to the older 1773AK. Not sure if this is a glitch at Bosch’s end, or simply because it is defaulting to it because I’m in Canada and it knows it is not available here.)

Here’s a review from CopTool I found for it:

    http://www.coptool.com/bosch-5-concrete-surface-grinder-update-csg15/

The video a Bosch rep at World of Concrete Vegas 2015 from that same article also…

As I mentioned, I could not find a “Buy Now” link on the Bosch product page for this new grinder nor could I find any source for Canadian online retailers that offered it Googling for such. I’m assuming you simply cannot get it up here in Canada…yet? Anybody from Bosch (Jim maybe) knows when it may become available in Canada? Please chime in.

Here’s a couple of pics. One is of the older model 1773AK, and the other is of the newer CSG15. (I just kind of noticed that the new grinders product number CSG is acronym for “Concret Surface Grinder”. I guess the 15 at the end represents the release year?)

    a) I dont own a grinder of any sort
    b) I cant even think of a need for one
    c) I still want it

This is on my list as well, I want one so that I can smooth out the front of the garage and perhaps build some counter tops with it.

Not to mention smoothing the concrete in the basement bathroom before tiling. 🙂

I have plans to build 2 concrete counter tops in my house (eventually), one pored in place slab in a downstairs kitchen and one preformed with integrated sink for downstairs bathroom. Anyone know if that grinder can be used wet? From the reading i’ve done, sounds like wet grinding is the only way to get the highly polished surfaces needed for counters

I like the look of the new one!! I still wonder if they would approve any wet grinding…

Good question. As mentioned in my OP, the product manual available under the ‘support’ tab on the Bosch product page for the new grinder pulls up the older 1773AK only. Is this also happening to the members in the US, or just us Canucks because it is not available north of the border yet?

I have had that happen a few times over the years. Buy the latest and greatest only to see the upgraded tool a few days later.

Still doesn’t show as being available here in Canada nor can one even look at the owners manual online if you are set for Canadian identity for the new CSG15 grinder.

I have the older model, It works great for leveling bumps in concrete or removing thin set on floors. I would not use it to cover large areas as it is fairly reasonable to rent a larger unit for that. It really controls the dust and keeps the fog from forming in a room if you are dining it indoors. I have been extremely happy with the u it I have.

Have you had a chance to use the surface grinder yet? I am thinking about getting one soon.

I did just that this week. It worked great for the little area I used it for. I used it to clean up an 8 foot strch about 6 inches wide at the front edge of my garage pad. Took just a few minutes to do it all. Looks pretty clean now.

You’re right. And now there’s the link to buy it from the Bosch site as well.

I was thinking the new model would have superior dust collecting capabilities over the older model, but I just used my 1773AK for the first time this week and its dust extraction was 100%.

Wow Doobie!! That looks tons better! Nice to hear the dust collection is excellent!

Thanks Andrew. Once I rounded the edge over, it looked like brand new concrete with the exception of saw marks on the vertical face which will be covered up soon with pavers. They’re coming Wednesday this week to start that work.

Well this is a bit of a head scratcher. The same place also carries the older model but shows it as costing $40 more.
