I found this list of names for house parts, some I knew and some I have never even heard of. Not sure I would ever use the ones I have never heard of however.

    Well…I identified about 4 of them…

I’m wondering if some of these terms aren’t regional words?

They could well be…they may also be archaic – some of I only knew from my dad and uncles and they most likely learned them from my grandfather.

I knew a few of them. One thing that is sad is most of these details are quickly fading among new homes as details add expense and a lot of people just don’t care about the details anymore.

okay , so I was not alone 🙁 I had about 5 , 2 of them I knew straight away because one I have on my home , the bulls eye window, and I kinda heard that expression in French, plus the white (Efflorescence) of the Bricks , we have had many cases here with some contractors recently.

wouldnt surprise me if some of them are regional. back in trade school we had discussions on all the names specific parts of a house has

rim joist- king joist. ribbon, belt, for example

I think some of those are regional. For example, what they call barge rafter, we call fly rafter.

I was hoping I could identify a couple, but I didn’t know any of them. I guess I’m the big dummy in the group. Where do I pick up my Biggest Loser prize? 🙂

I knew five and some only somewhat because I speak French and had heard of their parts before and remembered them. That was a tough list!

I was caught by surprise on some of these myself.

What an interesting read. I must admit I didn’t know the majority of the names. Thanks for sharing that
