This is what comes to mind when a home owner says to me, I am going to do my own “project” to save some $. Then they ask if I have any tips…
Sadly I have also seen tile work almost exactly like the photos.

Always learning, and some teaching along the way.

The number 1 tip should be call me when you get in over your head or if the project didn’t turn out like the youtube video. 😀

Some great pictures in there! Have a rain day today and just got lost in those photos for 20 min. Interesting stuff. “I tell you, it’s the crap mortar” lol

I hate it when I see people using floor tiles for backsplash or for inside a shower .It looks so cheesy .

Yep, and because guys like this are so cheap, they probably have weeks of jobs lined up that will look just like this! I wish more homeowners would demand a higher quality of work.

Maybe it’s just me, but it’s my impression that people concentrate too much on expensive finishes and materials at the expense of quality workmanship.

I’ve seen a lot of this type of work for people that rent lower end apartments, units etc.

Cowboy contractors getting away with stuff like this makes me sick.

Here is an example of a failed pan and leaking curb… It pays to not hire the lowest bidder…

    #246101

Look how bad the curb was rotted, and up the wall as well. This leaked for a long time.

    #246103

Try this picture again… this 2×4 curb just pulled apart by hand.

The subfloor, studs, and some joist had to be replaced as well

Nice. I have tore out a couple showers that were that bad. The worst one I tore out was for a woman who hired a “contractor” she met at her church. The guy poured a concrete base on the floor, hung MR drywall on the walls and ceiling then slapped on some mastic and tile….It was bad, almost didn’t need tools to demo it.

That’s a hot mess. Too bad it wasn’t done correctly the first time around!

The worst part about all that to me is the black mold that accompanies it.
