my newer gen porter cable gun is acting up yet again.. its basically a throw away gun anyway but ive had to open the thing up twice to file down the drive pin.. but im getting tired of the guns finickyness… im currently looking at either the hitachi 15 gauge or the hitachi 16 gauge on amazon. i can get either shipped to my door for under $185.. most 16 gauge guns start at $190 here and 15 gauge guns start at $220.

id really like to get a 15 but the price of nails is double that of a 16 gauge..

    any recommendations?

thats the version of the 16 gauge i have.. its basically a toy compared to their older model. it took like 3 houses to break in when trimming. and its 1 /10th the gun the older style hitachi is.. im simply getting tired of buying guns that turn out to be toys.. the only two guns i own that ive actually been impressed with are my 18 gauge paslode f18-200.. and my ridgid 23 gauge micro pinner.. ive had 2 bosch 18 gauge guns.. the older style porter cable 18 gauge as well.. i do stain grade work the odd time and i cant afford to be having large nail holes or 2 holes from misfire and a drive pin that slips off the nail head when firing

I also liked the older guns more. They seemed to be much better built and didn,t feel as cheap as the new ones .

I’ve never tried the ones that you’re looking at Jeff, all my guns are Porter Cable and I’ve never had any problems with them. Most of my guns are 7 years old and one of them is 14 years old. How old is the Porter Cable that you’re having problems with?

I bought all but my oldest one in a package deal along with a pancake compressor. My dad wanted the compressor and I kept the guns. My 18 gauge is my most used so that will probably be the one I’ll replace first when the time comes. Do you guys use line filters with your guns?

you mean on the compressor. we have one on our 12 gallon rolair but none of the other compressors nor mine

id buy the paslode 16 gauge but Kent building supplies and prime are the only two places carrying them now..Kents prices are rediculous and i cant stand the service at prime.. i may stick my head into C.I.D who’s the senco dealer.. to see what their prices are like on the 16 gauge.. their much better to buy through

I have the 15 gauge Hitatchi. I have been happy with it for the past 3 years. Never had a issue with it. I have been happy with all Hitatchi nailers. Have a framer, 16 ga, and 18 ga. I have never had any issues with any of them.

Yeah I meant on the compressor Jeff. I’ve never bothered to put a moisture filter on mine but I was wondering how much difference it makes to the life of the guns.

I realize I’m not a lot of help on your answer, and turn out to be joining the crowd here, but here’s my $.02…. I don’t use them commercially, but for my personal house/garage projects, I have a set of the 16ga framing, 18 ga brad, and the pinner all from Porter Cable. I did buy them new, and I have been happy with them, but then again, limited use (framed basement, framed part of garage, etc..).

thats just it dave. the porter cable guns are far from being a production gun for any of the models

when im running my guns i use the 16 gauge for hanging doors, nailing closet shelving cleats. installing baseboard and any other built ins, also setting window jamb extensions and sils.. the 18 ga is used for all casings and 1/4 round, plus any other moldings. then my 23 gauge for micro moldings , crosss nailing mitres and nailing stain grade casing to the jambs.

when im in trim mode full out i can use a full box of 2″ 18 gauge, a box of 2″ 16 gauge and 1/2 a box of 2 1/2’s for teh 16 gauge.. if gun is new and starts giving me issues fairly quick ill open it up and do what needs to be done.. but if it continues to happen i either return it or sell it

Already have a Porter Cable 16 but I’d be interested to know how you like the Hitachi once you get it.
