The Balcony — Maybe More People Can Have One

Before we get into the topic at hand, let me just say that I’m the odd one here. I’m the guy that likes the new and interesting ideas that maybe don’t make too much sense to most people but are extremely intriguing. That’s why when I saw this product on Gizmag.com I said yes, people need to know about it. What am I talking about? The new Gallery window from a Polish company called FAKRO, which transforms into a balcony.
The window is meant for attic rooms with the roof sloping between 35 and 55 degrees. I personally love attic rooms so this automatically caught my eye. The window splits into a top and bottom half when opened. The top half flips up providing a roof for the “balcony” while the bottom half opens forward acting as a front wall. When you open the bottom portion the sides sprawl out two barriers to ensure no one falls out. As you can see in the pictures this window doesn’t actually become a balcony because you can’t walk out on to it or set up furniture. But it does provide a nice ledge for gazing into the stars or to sit on while the warm summer breeze circulates through the room. Personally, I think it’s a great alternative to spending massive amounts of money adding a balcony to a house, but what does everyone else think? Is it a good idea or a waste of money? Contractors, would you recommend this if your client couldn’t afford a balcony?

Looks no different than a regular window when closed. Photo thanks to fakrousa.com

As you can see, it’s not a full balcony, but it’s still a pretty nice ledge. Photo thanks to fakrousa.com
