Keyless car? How about a keyless home

You can turn on the lights in your house with just the clap of your hands, yet you still have to fumble for keys to get in the house when the rain pours. Thanks to SimpliciKey you no longer have to do that either, introducing the keyless home. These deadbolts come equipped with a wireless keypad, key fob and the classic key. The key fob can open the door from up to 50 feet away for easy access when carrying large loads in from the car. The keypad is perfect for anyone who just can’t keep tabs on their keys. And of course the key is a reassuring safety net for those who don’t always trust technology. SimpliciKey will actually be coming out with new technology integrated into this system in the near future.
Would you use this in your home? Do you have other ideas for integrating technology in your home or business? Drop me a note to discuss.

The minor repair – that’s not so minor

Flipping the hinge won’t work here – It would be the same pattern

There’s always that minor repair that kind of hangs around the house like a thick Midwest fog. Here’s one a friend of mine is dealing with. He’s got an old door that the screws have been in and out of the door hinges too many times, and the screw-holes are all stripped out. What to do?

I’ve seen a couple of tricks for that. Take a look at the hinge. On a lot of hinges, if you flip the part of the hinge attached to the door with the part attached to the frame & reverse the hinge pin, generally the screw pattern will not line up. Drill new pilot holes in the door and the frame a bit smaller than the screw size and you could be all set. It also helps if you can use longer screws. If that won’t work though, I’ve had to resort to longer screws and toothpicks or golf tees. They are both useful for filling up the hole and giving your screws something to bite into.
