Working with a Contractor / DIY’er

working with your contractorI’ve worked on many projects where the homeowner wants to help out.  This can be both a blessing and a curse.  I know we all would like to save a few bucks on the cost of a whole project, but we all need to know our limits.

Mark and Theresa at MyFixItUpLife.com did a good write up recently about some of the things to consider if you’re a DIY’er thinking about working with a contractor here.  On the top level, I love this idea.  I’m all for people learning a little more about building and the trades.

At the same time, I don’t think I want this on most of my jobs. I’m reminded of a shop I saw at a garage one time: $60 an hour labor, $70 an hour if you watch, $80 if you’ve tried to work on it already.  I’ve seen owners who would demo a bathroom, and leave it spotless and ready to go (Good!).  I’ve also seen sledge hammers put through many a wall that weren’t on the demo list (Bad!).

Have you ever worked on a project with the homeowner?  Or have you ever been on the other side of the coin, the inexperienced apprentice working on your own home?  Add your thoughts to this post.

As we hear about the recent damage reports along the East Coast about Hurricane Irene, thoughts turn to the destructive hurricanes in recent years, including Katrina, Ike and Andrew. Major storms inflict serious damage on houses and buildings in the affected areas. Man, Mother Nature can really be brutal.
